For a first planted shrimp tank, start with Java moss, Java fern and a manageable background plant such as water wisteria. Choose plants that suit the shrimp’s temperature and water, then provide enough light and nutrients for steady growth. Dense greenery offers grazing surfaces and shelter, but it does not make every fish safe for baby shrimp.
Ten options and where they work
1. Java moss
Java moss is useful on wood, rock or mesh, offering a fine network of grazing surfaces. Keep it thin enough that debris does not collect in a dark, compact center. Inspect clippings for shrimp before removal.
2. Java fern
Java fern provides broad leaves and shaded spaces without needing its rhizome buried. Attach it to hardscape or leave the rhizome exposed above the substrate. It suits a simple setup without injected CO₂, though it still needs nutrients.
3. Water wisteria
Water wisteria is a fast-growing stem option for the background. Leave space for it to expand and trim before it shades the whole aquarium. Tropica lists it as an undemanding, low-light plant; injected CO₂ is not a requirement for an ordinary shrimp setup.
4. Cryptocoryne
Choose the actual variety and its mature size. Cryptocoryne wendtii suits a leafy midground; small C. parva develops much more slowly. Supply appropriate root-zone nutrition and remove deteriorating leaves after planting without repeatedly uprooting a healthy remaining crown.
5. Süsswassertang
Also sold as subwassertang, this rootless fern gametophyte forms loose green cushions. Wedge a small portion into hardscape or hold it with thread rather than planting it like a rooted stem. Buce Plant’s growing guidance describes low-to-medium light and propagation by dividing the clump. Thin it when debris accumulates.
6. Pearl weed
Pearl weed can become a trimmed bush or a more compact foreground planting under stronger light. Check the supplier’s identification: Tropica sells it as Micranthemum glomeratum, with older names still appearing in descriptions. Do not choose lighting using a universal watts-per-gallon rule; fixture output, tank depth and plant response matter.
7. Pygmy chain sword
Helanthium tenellum, formerly commonly sold as Echinodorus tenellus, spreads by runners. Give it root-zone nutrition and enough light at substrate level. Tropica’s ‘Green’ cultivar guidance describes a low foreground carpet under suitable conditions. Remove unwanted runners before they fill maintenance access.
8. Red root floater
Phyllanthus fluitans offers hanging roots for grazing and surface shade. Thin it so light and gas exchange remain available below. Tropica notes stronger leaf coloration under more intense light; a green plant is not automatically unhealthy or in need of maximum lighting.
9. Bucephalandra
These slow-growing rhizome plants suit hardscape and sheltered areas. Choose cultivated stock and allow time for establishment. As Tropica’s planting instructions explain, keep the rhizome uncovered. Their slower growth means they will not absorb nutrients as quickly as a mass of healthy stem plants.
10. Marimo: a conditional choice
Marimo balls are algae rather than moss and suit cooler conditions better than a hot Sulawesi aquarium. Buy only where permitted and from an appropriate source: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documents zebra mussels arriving in aquarium moss balls. Follow local guidance if contamination is suspected. Refrigeration is not a substitute for identifying why a ball is deteriorating.
Introducing plants safely
Ask whether plants were treated with pesticides; rinsing alone does not guarantee removal of every treatment. Use supplier preparation instructions and consider tissue-cultured stock. Inspect plants for hitchhikers and remove packaging before planting.
Plant nutrition also matters. Do not assume shrimp waste supplies every required nutrient or that every trace-copper fertilizer is lethal. Seachem states Flourish is shrimp-safe when used as directed; assess each product separately and dose accurately. For the water and equipment plan, see setting up a freshwater shrimp tank.
